Toni Schneiders, Melonen Esser, Vintage Print, c. 1960s
Vintage gelatin silver print on Leonar paper
Yugoslavia, circa 1960s
Toni Schneiders (1920-2006) – German artist and one of the main actors of the scene after 1945
Verso titled ‘MELONEN ESSER AUF DEM MARKT V. OHRID’, inscribed ‘Lucaflex f: 50 mm. FP3) and with the photographers’s archive stamp
Image/sheet size: 24.2 x 30 cm
Very good condition
Toni Schneiders followed the ‘New Vision’ movement and was therefore focused on reality, when watching out for motifs; his works fetch over €5,800 on the international auction market

Toni Schneiders’s photographic output was deeply inspired by his travels, leading him, for instance, to countries like Croatia in Yugoslavia. When seeking out new motifs, he was always attracted to the people and relied on his ‘subjective’ sense of situations, contrasts and light effects.

Condition:
This vintage print is in very good condition considering its age. There are two tiny retouched spots to the t-shirt and the left arm of the boy due to irregularities within the negative. The sheet-sized image measures 24.2 x 30 cm.

Toni Schneiders (1920-2006)
In 1939 Toni Schneiders finished his apprenticeship as a photographer. During World War II he worked in the photocopying service of the army and from 1942 he was a war correspondent in France and Italy. Here he created, for instance, impressive shots of Mussolini’s liberation on the mountain massif of Gran Sasso. After the war Schneiders returned to Germany and created photo essays, advertising and travel photographs. He opened a photo studio and worked as a freelance photo journalist. In 1949 he co-founded the avant-garde group ‘fotoform’ together with Otto Steinert, Peter Keetman, Siegfried Lauterwasser, Wolfgang Reisewitz und Ludwig Windstoßer. From the 1950s onwards he undertook extensive travels to Southern Europe, Scandinavia, Ethiopia, North Africa, Japan and Southeast Asia. In 1999 Toni Schneiders was awarded the ‘Kulturpreis der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Photographie‘ along with Lauterwasser and Reisewitz. (cbo)
