The occupation of Hong Kong by the British closely correlates with the discovery of photography and has therefore promoted the development of a rich photographic community. The present photograph was taken by K. C. Chew, active as one of Hong Kong’s photographic pioneers. Little is known about his biography in the West, but his relevance within the circle of renowned Hong Kong photographers is clearly demonstrated by the exhibition stamps visible on the backside of the work offered here. It shows a misty lake landscape in front of a mountain panorama and captures the silhouettes of a number of peasants walking along the shore.
Condition:
The photograph is creased and shows some pressure marks, especially along the edges. The left edge shows a short tear in the lower third. A faint superficial damage has been retouched in the center of the depiction. Besides, scattered irregularities within the negative have also been retouched. The image/sheet measures 30.2 x 47.7 cm.
