One of the first ‘flexible’ pieces of furniture and one of the most important industrial designer pieces of the 1960s and the Italian design. ‘Tube Chairs’ are on display in important museum collections, including the MoMA and the Metropolitan Museum in New York

The Italian architect and designer Joe Colombo (1930-1971) designed the ‘Tube Chair’ in 1969, contributing to the social changes of the 1960s. His furniture is characterized by a radically new design language. The individual elements of the ‘Tube Chair’ can be combined in different manners, so than one or more persons can take a seat on it. The pieces can be plugged into each other as well. The chair is made entirely of synthetics and reflects the period’s interest in using manually produced materials for domestic purposes.

The chair is overall in good condition, showing some wear due to age. The tubes are slightly rubbed off and stained in part. One tube shows a loss in the PVC. The insides are somewhat scratched and worn. One tube was broken and has been restored professionally. The chair should be used with caution. The dimensions are 62 x 107x 60 cm.

Joe Colombo (1930-1971)

The Italian architect and designer Joe Colombo studied at the Milan Accademia Arti di Brera and, later, architecture at the University of Polytechnic in Milan. He was one of the most famous Italian designers of the 1960s. His designs were exhibited at the MoMA. His favorite materials were synthetic, from which he made functional and useful objects. (cko)
