The image area of this composition is occupied by a silhouette-like head shape with one eye. A small human figure superimposes the left half of the head shape. It bears a rounded ‘hole’ in its body that at the same time serves as a kind of second eye. Thus an interesting play of figure and ground is created.

The woodcut in colors is signed and dated lower right in pencil ‘Josef Felix Müller 92‘, and dedicated lower left in pencil ‘für Josef, Druckerexemplar’. The sheet is overall in very good condition with only one handling crease in the upper right margin. The image measures 42 x 30 cm, the sheet 76.8 x 56.3 cm.

Josef Felix Müller (b. 1955)

The artist, born in the Swiss town of Eggersriet, first completed a training as embroidery designer from 1971 to 1975. His artistic training took place autodidactic. The human body is the core theme of his works which is sometimes in a way sexually charged, that it provoked a confiscation because of ‘obscene publication’ in 1988. Besides paintings Josef Felix Müller also creates sculptures since 1981 made out of tree trunks, which the artist works on with ax and chainsaw, and an extensive graphical work comprising woodcuts, etchings and Lithographs. Josef Felix Müller lives and works in St. Gallen, Switzerland. (fea)

Die Bildfläche dieser Komposition wird von einer silhouettenartigen Kopfform mit einem Auge eingenommen. Eine kleine menschliche Gestalt überlagert die linke Hälfte dieser Kopfform, wobei ein rundliches „Loch“ in ihrem Körper gleichzeitig als eine Art zweites Auge dient. Es entsteht so ein interessantes Spiel von Figur und Grund.
