Description
A wrought iron hanging frame in the form of a lantern, possibly Mali, west Africa, of openwork form with domed top above a square section body, adorned overall with cut metal peacocks, other birds, a monkey and a gazelle, the four uprights at the corners with dished pans for oil lights, with stylised human figures as terminals, the interior with two further figures, 86cm high, 44cm wide. It has been suggested that this has previously served a ritual function.
