Two Trips to Gorilla Land, and the Cataracts of the Congo, 2 vols., 1st ed., Sampson Low, Marston, Low and Searle, 1876, two folding lithographed maps, four single-page wood engraved plates, wood engraved illusts. to text, 40 pp. pubs. cat. at rear of first vol., some spotting to prelims., second vol. with stain to upper inner corners of first few leaves, brown chalk-glazed endpapers, orig. green cloth, decorated in gilt and black, sl. rubbed (generally in good condition), 8vo. Casada 66. Penzer, p. 94. Burton spent four years as Consul in Fernando Po, an island off the west coast of Cameroon in West Africa, during which time he took every opportunity to explore, including Gabon and the Fan people, the Mission to Dahomey (now Benin), and his later travels in South America and up the Congo River.
