A FINE PAIR OF FRENCH 20-BORE SILVER-MOUNTED FLINTLOCK PISTOLS BEARING THE SYMBOL OF THE DAUPHIN OF FRANCE
BY THIOLLIERE FRERES, THIRD QUARTER OF THE 18TH CENTURY
With blued two-stage swamped barrels each with punched and gilt ornament comprising flowering foliage, shells, beadwork and a mythical bird, silver fore-sights, border and scroll engraved bright tangs, signed flat bevelled border and scroll engraved flat locks, figured walnut full stock carved in low relief with scrollwork and sprays of foliage, silver mounts decorated in relief with rococo ornament against a stippled ground comprising solid side-plates each involving a martial trophy and a lion, trigger-guards each with sunburst and crescent moon finial, and spurred trigger-guards each with cap bearing the stylised crowned dolphin of the Dauphin, and whalebone ramrods each with dark horn tip
