A MAGNIFICENT PAIR OF IMPERIAL FRENCH (FIRST EMPIRE) 40-BORE FLINTLOCK PISTOLS FOR A SENIOR GENERAL
BY LE PAGE, PARIS, SERIAL NO. 1070, DATED '1808'
With fine twist swamped octagonal barrels each cut with multi-groove rifling, inlaid with a gold-band at the muzzle, gold-inlaid signature 'Le Page à Paris Arq.er De l'Empereur' and with gold panel at the breech engraved with foliage and a foudre with two crossed lightning flashes behind, half-moon blade fore-sights, gold-lined touch-holes, border and foliate engraved tangs each incorporating the notched standing rear-sight, finely engraved flat bevelled locks each with stepped tail, shaped cock, raised semi-rainproof pan lined in gold, roller and gold-lined maker's stamp signed 'LE PAGE' beneath a sunburst, well figured walnut half-stocks each with shaped chequered panels to each face of the butt and carved with a band of foliage around the edge of the pommel, set triggers, finely engraved iron mounts to each including spurred trigger-guard with large urn finial, side-nail plates engraved with foliage on the front-plate and a fan and two swans on the rear-plate, and butt-cap with large gold-inlaid foudre with two crossed lightning flashes behind, and no provision for ramrods, in remarkable unrestored condition retaining original faded browning to the barrels, grey case-hardened finish to the locks and mounts, and some bluing on the steel-springs
