[DUBOIS CHATELERAUT, Michel.] Gravûres représentant les differentes machines servant à la fabrication des monnoyes au balancier, construites à venise pour le service de la sérénissime République. [Parma: J. Antoine Gozzi, 1757.] 2° (330 x 222mm). Woodcut arms of Philippe, Duke of Parma on title, 10 engraved plates by G. Zucchi. (Lower corner of last leaf lightly waterstained, light marginal finger-soiling.) Contemporary marbled calf, flat spine decorated in gilt (spine worn, extremities rubbed). Provenance: Eugène Chapper (bookplate, 1827-1890).

Rare reference book on manufacturing coins in the 18th century. The plates depict different kind of mints. By the late 18th century the industrial revolution was in full swing and along with it came a number of different machines for pressing coinage. The use of the coin press to strike coins had only been in practice since the mid-16th century; prior to this all coinage was made by hand. In the earliest days it was made by melting the alloy being used and pouring it into moulds. Not in the standard bibliographies, only one copy in BnF.
