Anthologia diaforon epigrammaton palaion (graece) ... Florilegium diversorum epigrammatum
Description
Anthologia diaforon epigrammaton palaion (graece) ... Florilegium diversorum epigrammatum veterum. [Geneva]: Henricus Stephanus, 1566. 4° (257 x 160mm). Woodcut printer’s device on title. (Title lightly browned, light worming, a little stronger in margin of last few leaves, lightly browned, fore-edges slightly discoloured.) Modern calf with old blind-stamped covers and spine re-laid, green edges (lightly rubbed along joints, new endpapers).
Estienne's important edition of the 'Greek Anthology', which provided a far superior text than its predecessors. ‘For this edition Henri devised a system of diacritical marks “peculiar to himself” (“notae sibi peculiares”) to denote various classes of proper nouns… [and] also employs in the margins the symbol of the hand with pointing finger to call attention to gnomic expressions in the text’ (Schreiber). Adams A-1187; Schreiber 159.
