Bowen coloriées à la main et rehaussées à la gomme arabique, la plupart d'après Charles Bird King. Reliure de l'éditeur en chagrin brun, plats ornés à froid, dos à nerfs ornés, tranches dorées.

Reproduction en format réduit de l'édition in-folio parue en 1836-1844. Les planches, décrites par Howes comme "the most colorful portraits of Indians ever executed", ont été réalisées d'après les portraits de Charles Bird King conservés à la Indian Gallery du département jusqu'à leur destruction dans l'incendie du Smithsonian en 1865.
