John Parkes & Sons sextant late 19th century, brass sextant marked Negus, New York; in dovetailed box with John Parkes & Sons, 6 Price St. Liverpool label, included with extra lenses; brass plate on cover inscribed: JJ IGOE.

Other Notes: Lt. James Joseph Igoe (1859-1919) served in the Spanish American War and was Captain of the USS Celtic which was the largest contingent of the South Carolina Navy Militia. Under his direction the vessel supplied forces in American and Cuban waters and sailed around Cape Horn for operations in the Philippine Islands. He and his family settled in Charleston, South Carolina and he constructed a house at 9 New St. For a period of time he served as the Harbor Commissioner. He was married to Caroline Florence Humphry and together they had several children.
This sextant was used by Lt. Igoe when he sailed around Cape Horn, Africa.
