Napoleonic War Period Officer’s Fighting Sword / Hanger, y Knubley of London. Circa 1790’s.
This fighting sword was probably carried by a Naval Officer. The single edged curved 29 inch blade, with engraved decoration of a Crowned GR cypher and Royal Coat of Arms. The hilt with single brass bar guard and plain backstrap to the white bone grip. The latter with twist wire binding. Housed in original black leather and gilt mounted scabbard, this fitted with both frog button and two loose rings. The top mount with engraved cutler’s details of “Knubley & Co. 7 Charing Cross London. The sword is with some age wear, gilt worn to base metal and old repair to the bar guard. Blade with some pitting and engraving faint. Leather to the scabbard remains supple, but has one hole.
