Royal Navy Pioneer Submarine Captain’s Officer’s Silver Napkin Ring Engraved with his Ships etc.
The silver napkin ring was used by Lieutenant H.G.J. Good Captain of H.M. Submarine A5 when on the 16th February 1905 an explosion killed six of the ten man crew. The napkin ring bears Birmingham Hallmarks for 1905 and maker’s mark of William Hutton & Sons Ltd. The outer rim is engraved “J. H. G Good” and a list of all his postings, these include No.1 Submarine, A5 Submarine, HMS Royal Arthur, HMS Prince George etc.
Lieutenant H.G.J. Good was was promoted to Lieutenant in 1902. After service in Submarine No.1 he was appointed Captain of Submarine A5 After refuelling she suffered a petrol explosion killing six crew members, Lt Good continued his service on surface vessels and in 1918 was holding the rank of Acting Commander.
