Scottish Canadian Regiment of Fencible Infantry George III Grenadier Company Officer’s shoulder belt
Description
Scottish Canadian Regiment of Fencible Infantry George III Grenadier Company Officer’s shoulder belt plate 1803-16
A very fine and extremely scarce gilt example. Oval plate incised with hooped border, centrally a crown over a thistle resting in ‘Canadian Regiment’ text that flanks a flaming grenade. Hook and two studs to reverse. Slight wear to gilt on highpoints, generally VGC.
Originally raised in Scotland for service in Canada but after a near mutiny caused by erroneous rumours that the regiment had been bought by HEIC to serve in India, reorganised in Canada with Scottish Officers and local other ranks. Took part in battles of the Chateauguay, Crystler's Farm, Salmon River and Lacolle. Disbanded May 1816 at Montreal. This actual plate is illustrated in ‘A Scarlet Coat. Uniforms, Flags and Equipment of the British Forces in the War of 1812’ by René Chartland.
