Lot No: 9 - Ref No: 021 Stan and Harry - Dartmoor Tin Miners By Ann L. Roe (Jones) Summer Holiday Home: Baskervilles Ice Cream and Coffee Shop, Moretonhampstead The title 'Stan and Harry" is a play on the word 'Stannary' from 'Stanum', the Latin word for tin. Tavistock, Ashburton, Chagford and Plympton were 'Stannary Towns' established by King Edward 1's 'Stannary Charter' in the 1300's, as places where refined tin was assessed, coined and sold. The tin hat and lit candle, pasties, a waterwheel, a hand tool, a pub, streams, rocks, and granite tors illustrate different aspects of the lives of the Dartmoor Tin Miners and their families. Look for the 'The Tinner's Rabbits'/ 'The Three Hares', on the back of Stan's waistcoat and the mysterious optical illusion they create. A fascinating story worthy of your further research. Industrialisation is no friend of the environment but tin mining over many centuries was a reality and part of the history of Dartmoor and its people. Ann is a professional portrait artist who often describes herself as a 'people painter'. London born and from an artistic family background of musicians, singers, actors and theatre producers, she has spent most of her working life in Devon. Ann is a Trustee and Honorary Academician of the South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts. Her 'Elementary my dear Otter' sculpture in the 2017 Moor Otter catalogue, based on the well-known story of the 'Hound of the Baskervilles', aroused much interest and competition at auction. This Otter is a 'Golden Otter' - one that has been specially selected by a panel of expert judges as being particularly stunning. Of the 81 Moor Otters there are only 25 Golden Otters. These Golden Otters will take their online bids to the live auction on Saturday, 2nd October 2021 at Bearnes, Hampton & Littlewood, Okehampton St, Exeter. You can continue to bid on these otters at the live auction in person or online.
