In many of her sculptures, Lesley Dill explores the relationship of language to the female body. In this powerful work, a woman’s truncated body is hanging by ropes of text. Dill is inspired by poetry and has often used the text of Emily Dickinson, as well as Pablo Neruda and Franz Kafka to name a few, as well as her own childhood dreams and visions.
Lesley Dill (American, b. 1950)
Working with a diverse range of materials and media –from cast bronze and sheet metal to horsehair and paper- Lesley Dill is a painter, printmaker, sculptor, photographer, and performance artist with an abiding interest in language. She often layers fragments of poetry over visuals of human form, emphasizing her belief in the transformative, visceral power of language. As Dill explains, "Language is the touchstone, the pivot point of all my work." Lesley Dill received a BA from Trinity College in 1972, an MAT from Smith College in 1974, and an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1980. Dill has been the focus of two retrospective exhibitions and her work has been exhibited in solo shows throughout the United States. She has been included in group shows such as Slash: Paper Under the Knife at the Museum of Arts and Design (2009), Reconfiguring the Body in American Art 1820—2009 at the National Academy Museum (2009), and Threadbare: A Subversive Aesthetic at SUNY Stony Brook (2003). Lesley Dill’s work is housed in the collections of many institutions, including Cleveland Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum. Her awards include a sculpture fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and a grant from the Joan Mitchell Foundation. She currently lives and works in New York City.
