A super realist wax multiple by the British artist Gillian Wearing. She is one of the Young British Artists group, a graduate of Goldsmiths in London in 1990. The YBA, which also includes the famous artist members Tracy Emin and Damian Hirst, are best known for their shock tactics and use of throwaway materials, wild living, and an artistic attitude of being both oppositional and entrepreneurial at the same time. This surrealistic sculpture is of the artist’s own hand, replete with differing colored nail polish on each finger. A limited edition published by London’s Whitechapel Gallery in 2012 and now sold out.
Gillian Wearing (b. Birmingham, United Kingdom, 1963)
Turner Prize-winner Gillian Wearing produces candid works revealing the disconnect between our inner lives and public personas, the individual and society, and truth and fiction. Inspired by documentaries, reality television, and the artifice of theater, Wearing describes her approach as “editing life.” In its candor and psychological intensity, Wearing’s work extends the traditions of photographic portraiture initiated by August Sander, Walker Evans, and Diane Arbus. Likewise, her oeuvre may be understood as an art-world harbinger of reality television. Gillian Wearing has studied at the Chelsea School of Art and Goldsmiths College, University of London, and earned a BFA in 1990. She has had solo exhibitions at the Centre d’Art Contemporain in Geneva, the Serpentine Gallery in London, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago among others. Wearing was awarded an OBE (Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for her contributions to the arts of Britain and elected as lifetime member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
