Roy Lichtenstein created his 1979 Untitled fabric multiple in collaboration with the Fabric Arts Workshop, a museum in Philadelphia that specializes in creating contemporary fabric sculpture works. The limited edition silkscreen was printed on silk sateen fabric and fashioned into a “shirt” based on Lichtenstein’s directions. Lichtenstein’s iconic Pop signature – his Benday dots - combined with different colored bands of stripes, create a functioning sculpture that can be worn by the owner. The silk material, combined with the design that cleverly encircles the wearer, shows that the artist was thinking about the kinetic potential of the so-called “garment.” As a shirt, this work has been often undervalued, and therefore is a fantastic price for a 1979 signed limited sculpture edition by the artist.
Roy Lichtenstein (American, 1923-1997)
Next to Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein is possibly the best known representative of Pop Art. The Pop Art movement was formed in the 1950s independently in the USA and England and spread throughout North America and Europe in the 1960s. The motifs of Pop Art originate from mass media, advertising and the consumer world. Early in his career, the mid 1950s, Lichtenstein found his signature Pop style inspired by the images found in the newspaper comics. He appropriated the illustrational components of these (benday dots, black outlines, primary colors) and used them in his painting and sculpture. An international breakthrough came in 1961 with his famous workLook Mickey. From the 1980s onwards, he returned to his artistic roots, which can be found in Surrealism and Expressionism. Roy Lichtenstein was the first American artist to exhibit at the Tate gallery in London, 1964. He also exhibited at the Documenta in Kassel in 1968 and 1977. The Guggenheim museum in New York held the artist’s first retrospective in 1969 and a second one in 1994. Recent retrospectives have been held at the following; Museum of Modern Art, NYC, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, Hayward gallery in London, the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid, Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. In addition to paintings he created screen and woodblock prints, collages, ceramics and sculptures.
