Anna Sewell (English, 1820-1878)
After a childhood injury, Sewell was primarily confined to her house as an invalid and had to travel largely by carriage horse. Her experiences traveling by carriage gave her an enduring love of horses. In the later years of her life, Sewell wrote “Black Beauty (1877)”. The fictional autobiography of the gentle horse brought has since become a children’s classic. However, Sewell intended the edition to affect the hearts of those who worked with horses with the aim to “induce kindness, sympathy, and an understanding.” She passed away shortly after the book was published with just enough time to see the books earliest successes.
