When he returned to the United States, he took a job as an English teacher. Michener continued to study and to work as a teacher, moving between several states before he was called to active duty during World War II. Michener’s experiences traveling in the service inspired him to write his Pulitzer Prize winning novel, “Tales of the South Pacific (1947)”. The novel was later made into a Broadway musical and two feature films. Michener’s subsequent works continued to draw from detailed historical understanding, including “Hawaii (1959)” and “The Covenant (1980)”.
