Allen Ginsberg (American, 1926-1997)
Ginsberg is widely considered one of the 20th century’s most influential American poets. He grew up in New Jersey before moving to New York City to attend Columbia University. At school, He met Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs, and he studied under William Carlos Williams. In the 1940s, Ginsberg began to increase his focus on his writings as he explored his attraction to men. In 1954, Ginsberg moved to San Francisco to become a part of what would be known as the Beat Movement. The following year, Ginsberg read excerpts from his poem, “Howl” at a gallery. City Lights Bookstore then published, “Howl and Other Poems,” which became a key manifesto for the entire Beat Generation. The poem was marked as obscene, and Ginsberg was then tried for its content. During this time, Ginsberg experienced the loss of his mother. Naomi Ginsberg had suffered from mental health issues, and she died in 1956 two days after receiving a lobotomy. Ginsberg’s subsequent work included the poem, “Kaddish for Naomi Ginsberg (1894-1956)”. The work explored his past relationship with his mother, and was later considered one of the great high points of his career. When Ginsberg passed away himself, his poetry left a resounding social impact and numerous accolades.
