Maurice Sendak’s most beloved children’s book, “Where the Wild Things Are,” has been made into an animated short, an opera, and a live auction film. This story, first published in 1963 has touched innumerable hearts with over 19 million copies sold, and counting. The year after the story was first published it was awarded the prestigious Caldecott Medal for “most distinguished American picture book for children.” But before all of that, it started with a simple story of a young boy named Max, who dresses up as a wolf, wreaks havoc at his home, and is subsequently sent to bed without supper. Max decides to escape to the land of the wild things, where he quickly becomes king. Nonetheless, after some fun with his subjects, Max discovers that there truly is no place like home. When he returns, Max finds that his dinner is waiting for him after all.

This drawing is in very good condition. There is light staining and pencil marks along the paper. The drawing is 22 in x 18 ¾ in; 55.8 cm x 47.6 cm (length x width).

Maurice Sendak (1928-2012)

Maurice Sendak was a renowned author and illustrator of children’s books. Sendak is best known for writing and illustrating the critically acclaimed, Where the Wild Things Are. His oeuvre of books he wrote and illustrated also includeIn the Night Kitchen and Outside Over There, in addition to the many other books he drew illustrations for. The dark and moody, yet realistic nature of his illustrations and style were directly influenced by his own childhood – growing up during the Depression, World War II and being sick for a majority of his youth. As far as he could remember, Sendak always loved to draw. In high school he worked part time for All-American Comics and later took a job making window displays for F.A.O Schwartz. Sendak was an early member of the National Board of Advisors of Children’s Television Workshop during the development stages ofSesame Street and created the television programSeven Little Monsters. Among many awards and achievements, Sendak received the Hans Christian Anderson Award for illustration in 1970 and was inducted into the New York Writers Hall of Fame in 2013.
