LINDENBERG, JACOB (Publisher) BIBLIAMagnificent antique family bible from the early 18th century.
Magnificent antique family bible from the early 18th century. This quality work has been an exhibit on loan to a museum for the past fifty years. The first three pages have been inserted in recent times and contain a family tree starting 1232 AD of a branch of the de Villiers clan.
Both Old and New Testaments, interleaved with a masterpiece of Romeyn De Hooghe's Bible illustrations, (Vos Henricus - Alle de voornaamste historien des Ouden en Nieuwen Testaments. Verbeeld in uytsteekende konst-platen) thus 2 volumes in one. Seemingly not a common edition; not mentioned in Darlow/Moule.
Lavishly illustrated with engraved illustrations mostly by Romyn De Hooghe : frontispiece, 2 illustrated title pages, 5 full-page plates. 122 half-page illustrations on 61 pages, another 16 half-page illustrations among text (138 in all), 3 double-page folding maps of the Mediterranean and Bible Lands and a folding sketch map of roads.
Original leather on wooden boards, blind stamped decorations on front and back covers; back with six bands (has had some restoration work done to it). With the exception of one cornerpiece on the back cover, all the brasswork on corners, and clasps are present and in good order. The pagination of this bible is erratic, since each of the chapters is separately paginated, with the plates, and sometimes their texts, in between; The last page (John; Revelations) verses 15 onwards, is missing, and the next page, while present, has been crudely repaired with sellotape.
